Just Transition and Sustainable Development: Climate Resilience and New Perspectives for Labor and Migration
Social Issues in Mountain Regions are one of the most pressing and complex challenges, impacting a significant number of residents in these areas, particularly vulnerable groups. Mountain regions in Kyrgyzstan and other countries with similar geographies face numerous difficulties related to poverty, and limited access to infrastructure, healthcare services, education, and employment opportunities.
We are confident that investments in social protection support in these regions will not only mitigate the impacts of climate change but also create new economic opportunities, ensuring sustainable development for our communities.
Migration, as a result of economic, social, and environmental factors, also plays a key role in shaping labor market dynamics. It opens new opportunities but also presents challenges for society in terms of integration and protecting the rights of migrants.
In the Kyrgyz Republic, with the support of IOM, data collection is being carried out in the southern part of the country as part of a three-year panel study. The findings of the study revealed significant differences in the impact of environmental or climate threats in the Batken, Jalal-Abad, and Osh regions. These regions are particularly vulnerable to environmental or climate-related threats, which in turn leads to migration and underscores the need for targeted support and the development of strategies to enhance resilience to mitigate the negative impacts on local communities and their livelihoods.
