IOM and the UN Network on Migration Welcome Kyrgyzstan’s Endorsement of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration

Bishkek– The International Organization for Migration (IOM) today praised the official endorsement of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Japarov, through a presidential decree, of the  Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).

Aligned with the commitments shown by other Heads of State, Governments and High Representatives, this endorsement recognizes that migration is a source of prosperity, innovation and sustainable development in an increasingly interconnected world.

“Kyrgyzstan’s participation in the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration will enhance the protection of migrant rights, curb irregular migration, and support the country’s sustainable development,” said Jyldyz Polotova, Minister of Labour, Social Security and Migration of the Kyrgyz Republic. “It will also bolster international dialogue and the exchange of experiences in tackling global challenges.”

“The decision of the government of the Kyrgyz Republic to support the GCM reflects the growing understanding on governing migration in a human rights-based manner. IOM stands ready to support the country in turning this commitment into reality, especially for migrants and people on the move," said Bermet Moldobaeva, IOM Head of Office in Kyrgyzstan.

Since 2015, IOM has supported the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in developing a National Referral Mechanism for assistance to victims of trafficking, adopted in September 2019, which also informed the development of a Concept of Migration Policy, adopted in May 2021.

The UN Network on Migration in Kyrgyzstan, co-chaired by IOM and the UN Resident Coordinator, also welcomed the Government’s endorsement and will remain committed to supporting the implementation of the GCM. The next step is to advance planning and prioritization for effective and sustainable GCM implementation.
