Central Asian republics prepare data collection on climate-induced migration

Almaty - The Government of the Kyrgyz Republic has included the term “climate-induced migrants” in the Migration Policy Concept of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2022-2030 and its National Action Plan until 2025 and encourages stakeholders to deepen the understanding of the complex interactions between the environment, climate change, and migration dynamics, which in turn allows to develop and implement effective policies aiming to mitigate the negative consequences of forced environmentally induced migration.

On 22-23 June 2023, the government partners representing the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, the National Statistics Committee, and national research partner participated in a two-day workshop on migration, environment and climate change organized by International Organization for Migration.  The workshop brought together government agencies and the research community from five Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan to plan a data collection on climate-induced migration.

The workshop was held in the framework of the IOM Asian Regional Migration Program with support from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, as well as the IOM Development Fund (IDF).
