IOM begins collecting data on the mobility patterns of people in Kyrgyzstan
Toru-Aigyr – On 25 March, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) begins collecting data on the mobility patterns of people in Kyrgyzstan, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection, and Migration, the National Statistics Committee, as part of the Mobility Tracking Matrix (MTM) Project. This project uses IOM’s Global Displacement Tracking Matrix method, which was adjusted to fit the local context.
The Project aims to enhance the knowledge of migration trends in Kyrgyzstan and help create sound migration policies that foster social harmony, economic growth, and human rights protection for everyone.
IOM's assigned surveyors will be gathering Baseline Mobility Assessment data throughout the country in April. This process involves getting information on migration patterns, movements, and numbers in every village and in the smallest areas.
The MTM serves as a comprehensive system for tracking and monitoring population movements and mobility. It is designed to systematically collect, process, and disseminate information, providing stakeholders with a better understanding of the movements and changing needs of mobile populations, whether they are on the ground or on the move. The data collection process helps to measure internal and external migration flows. IOM will help local authorities to improve their skills in gathering and examining data.
This Project is supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the European Union.
