Open Air Yoga Marathon Celebrates Indian Culture in Bishkek
Bishkek– International Organization for Migration (IOM) organised the Open Air Yoga Marathon, a three-day event that showcased yoga as an important part of Indian culture and heritage. The event took place from 23 to 25 July 2024 in three locations, Yntymak Park, Oak Tree Park and Ak Bosogo Park, attracting city-dwellers who wanted to experience the ancient practice of yoga.
The Open Air Yoga Marathon was open to everyone, regardless of fitness level and age. No registration was required. All participants had to bring was a yoga mat, a bottle of water, and a positive attitude.
The event featured classes taught by an experienced instructor who has been teaching yoga for over 10 years in Kyrgyzstan. She helped participants learn new asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing techniques) and relax after a hard day’s work. Participants also had the opportunity to consult for free and learn more about the benefits of yoga for physical and mental health, such as improving flexibility, strength, posture, blood circulation, immunity, mood, and concentration.
The Open Air Yoga Marathon aimed to promote yoga as a holistic way of life that can help people find peace, harmony and balance in today’s stressful world. The event also sought to strengthen the cultural ties between India and Kyrgyzstan and foster mutual understanding and respect.
One of the guests at the event was Antje Grawe, UN Resident Coordinator in Kyrgyzstan, who expressed her appreciation for the initiative and shared her thoughts on yoga.
“Yoga is a wonderful practice that not only helps us to connect with ourselves, but also connects people across the globe. It’s symbolic that the yoga class took place near the statue of Kurmanjan Datka to celebrate the women’s strength. Yoga is a universal language that transcends borders and cultures and fosters peace and solidarity among nations,” – she said.
